STEM classes hope to integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math through project based “learning” activities. I have taught both basic, hands-on engineering along with physical science (chemistry and physics) at the middle level. Integrating these four independently complex and technical subjects into a meaningful and engaging program is a very, very difficult challenge for teachers. One of the main ingredients I see missing in many STEM activities is an essential aspect of any technical field: measurement! So here are several activities that can be completed with ordinary, inexpensive household materials – and they all require measurement in the planning and construction of design solutions. Cheers!
